When Arturo Durazo was arrested the FBI confiscated his address book and photocopied it. My investigation of Durazo began with a FBI letter that congratulated my father on arresting him. However the moment that my father and Durazo met is hardly mentioned in the FBI files. I had expected the FBI documents to detail the actual arrest–to give some indication of the logistics of organizing it and carrying it out. Disappointingly, there are no mug shots in the files, no catalogue of items confiscated, no analysis of the fugitive’s behavior.
The address book is the only clear portrait of Durazo in the entire file. The Xeroxed images of the address book mark the only in-focus fingerprint of Durazo in the files. Through these images the distance between the rumor and the reality of the man is suddenly shortened. While the files detail a lot about Durazo’s crimes, movements, and the FBI’s scheming about his capture, they actually give little more than a speculative portrait of who he is. Everything is second-hand, rumor, and assumption. In fact the FBI’s distance from Durazo only seems to perpetuate the aura of mystery and legend surrounding him.

Cuando Arturo Durazo fue arrestado, el FBI le confiscó su agenda de contactos y la fotocopió.
La investigación de Colwell sobre Durazo comenzó con una carta del FBI donde se le felicita a su padre por arrestarlo, sin embargo, el momento del encuentro entre su padre y Durazo casi no es mencionado en los archivos del FBI.
Colwell había esperado que los documentos del FBI detallaran el arresto, que dieran alguna indicación logística de su organización y su ejecución. Decepcionantemente, no hay mug shots en los archivos, ni un catálogo de objetos confiscados, ni un análisis del comportamiento del fugitivo.
La agenda de contactos es el único retrato claro del archivo total de Durazo. A partir de esas imágenes la distancia entre el rumor y la realidad de un hombre es, de pronto, reducida. Mientras que los archivos detallan mucho sobre los crímenes de Durazo, sus movimientos y los planes del FBI para su captura, en realidad, dan poco más que un retrato especulativo sobre quién es él. Todo es información de segunda mano, rumor, y suposición. De hecho la distancia del FBI respecto a Durazo sólo parece perpetuar el aura de misterio y de leyenda que lo rodean.
