Landscape / History shows slowed down film of artillery explosions and bombings. These film clips are often presented in documentaries and exhibitions about World War One. However, while they look like documentary footage, they are in fact reenactments of battle that were staged for movies and propaganda. Despite their fictitious origins, these clips are presented as if they were representative of the war itself. For me these explosions call attention to how we often mistake the copy for the original within the context of history and moreover, how it’s often very difficult to identify the fictionalized parts of our historical narratives.
Landscape / History muestra un film ralentizado de explosiones de artillería y bombardeos. Los clips de este film son comúnmente presentado en documentales y exhibiciones sobre la Primera Guerra Mundial. Sin embargo, aunque se ven como si fueran metraje documental, de hecho son crestomatías de batalla que fueron escenificadas para películas y propaganda. A pesar de sus orígenes ficticios, estos clips son presentados como si fueran representaciones de la guerra misma. Para mí estas explosiones centran la atención en cómo seguido confundimos la copia con el original sin el contexto histórico y aún más, cómo frecuentemente es muy difícil identificar las partes ficticias de nuestras narrativas históricas.
