In Unreadable Texts, Colwell meticulously draws on silk fragments of ancient texts and declassified documents from her archive.
As Colwell researches a topic she often saves documents that interest her, not for their subject matter, but for what they represent as a metaphor of history. One folder of these saved documents contains declassified texts that are unreadable because the original is so degraded or the entire text is blacked out.
Another folder contains photographs of fragments of ancient texts and documents that have been collected from 32 BC trash heap in Egypt discovered in the late nineteenth century. Over the years academics have meticulously deciphered a small portion of these slivers papyrus in an attempt to preserve ancient literature and catch a glimpse of a world long gone through discarded bureaucratic documents.
For Colwell the absurdity of declassified documents that reveal nothing and the Sisyphean task of decoding snippets from an ancient trash heap reveal what we often prefer to forget about history: most of the story is lost and the fragments that we can read or interpret are the exception, not the rule.

Cuando Colwell investiga un tema, constantemente guarda documentos que le interesan, no por su asunto sino por lo que representan en tanto que metáforas de la historia.Una carpeta de esos documentos guardados contiene textos desclasificados que son ilegibles debido a que el original está muy degradado o el texto entero está ennegrecido.
Otra carpeta contiene fotografías de fragmentos de textos antiguos y documentos que fueron recogidos en Egipto de un montón de basura del año 32 a.c. descubierto a finales del siglo XIX. Durante años, académicos han descifrado meticulosamente una pequeña parte de esos papiros astillados, como un intento tanto de preservar la literatura antigua como de echar un vistazo a un mundo, hace mucho tiempo desaparecido, empleando documentos burocráticos descartados.
Para Colwell el absurdo de los documentos desclasificados que no revelan nada y la Sísifa tarea de decodificar retazos de un basurero antiguo revelan que, con frecuencia, preferimos olvidarnos de la historia: la mayor parte del pasado está perdida y los fragmentos que podemos leer o interpretar son la excepción, no la regla.
