THEATRE BACKDROPS

Digital print, cotton canvas, rope and thread

Installation in the Otazu Foundation, Pamplona, Spain, 2019.

While I was hiking with former FMLN guerillas in El Salvador they told me about the mountains that they occupied for years. One man, gesturing to the surrounding trees and valleys, often referred to the land as the theatre of war.

It’s an odd, oxymoronic term.  Especially in conversation with a foreigner who has never experienced war.  And especially because this theater has a shifting memory, balanced between myth, documents, and disappearances.

As we walked over the terrain, I was reminded of the Shakespeare academics who reconstructed the Globe Theatre arguing: How could one really understand a work of Shakespeare without knowing the theatre the works were enacted within?

The same could be said for history.  What is the past if we can only imagine it’s setting?   Is history always a work of theatre?

The Theatre Backdrops works are enlarged, printed video stills of the former FMLN territory that I filmed while hiking with ex- guerillas.  These fragments of sky and terrain form a theatre screen of a history, waiting to be scripted, imagined, and rehearsed.
