PARA EL SR. BURKE

Digital Video, 2007

Para El Sr. Burke (For Mr. Burke) subtitles in English, 2007. Digital NTSC, 3 minutes, 24 seconds.

In the video Para el Sr. Burke / For Mr. Burke I combine images of avalanches and a narrative about early surgical studies that gave blind people sight. Between the baritone voice of the narrator and the slowly falling clouds of snow, the video entertains the idea of the sublime as an event that separates seeing and understanding. There is a ‘before and after’ that happens as a result of an avalanche disaster or from sight restoration that provides an echo of the contemporary sublime.

In either case there is a displacement of perception—what one knew before and what one knows after, and the event which divides the two.

My series of prints The Avalanche Series was made in dialogue with the video work.
