I am interested in images of power. Power and its visual tropes can both perpetuate and challenge our understanding of history by editing and re-narration of events. Especially when working with historical imagery, I find that the more aged the archival footage, the more obviously flexible and unspecific the images become. While we see power through gesture and movement, the references become flexible no matter how ardent or specific their original meaning. Formation attempts to mine the malleability of military parade footage as aggressive imagery.
Formation was originally presented as a series of 80 film slides advancing in a vintage slide carousel with a timer. For one exhibition Formation was presented in the digital video format shown below.
Estoy interesada en imágenes del poder. El poder y sus tropos visuales pueden ambos perpetuar y retar nuestro entendimiento de la historia al editar y recontar los eventos. Especialmente al trabajar con el imaginario histórico, encuentro que mientras más antiguo es el metraje del archivo, más obviamente flexibles e inespecíficas se tornan las imágenes. Mientras observamos el poder a través de gestos y movimientos, las referencias se flexibilizan sin importar lo ardoroso o específico de su significado original. Formation intenta minar la maleabilidad de los videometrajes de desfiles militares en tanto que imaginario agresivo.
