A NET, A BIND, A GAME

Three channel digital video NTSC, 2016.

Installation of the work in MARSO Gallery, 2016.

This work is part of my series on the history of the FALN.

One video monitor shows a woman’s hands tying the delicate knots of a net; on another monitor the same hands tighten a double-ended slipknot, loosen it, and retie it over and over again; on the last monitor the hands go through the lyrical, choreographed motions of forming geometric string figures.

In the room there are two speakers, on one speaker a text is recited in English and on the other the same text is recited in Spanish. The audio is from FALN’s memo, Security and the Cadre, which is partially a ‘how to’ guide for clandestine living and partially a ‘code of conduct’ for the group.

The video shows actions and objects that I felt had a dual symbolic charge in reference to the history of the FALN. A net can be understood as both a means to capture something or something to be eluded. A double slipknot, made and unmade repetitively, evokes the metaphor of a double bind that tightens at both ends in reaction to the force applied. String figures were traditionally used in American indigenous cultures to recount histories to children but are now mostly devoid of content and considered children’s’ games. For me, the lost stories of the string figures echoes how the FLAN’s context and their motives have been not only misunderstood and lost over time but even, according to the press, considered foolish and not taken seriously.
